Sensory Stories - Additional Information

Learning and Experimentation

Developing my understanding of sustainable darkroom techniques was a major part of the Sensory Stories project, I’ve been exploring alternative photographic processes, experimenting with plant-based developers to process black-and-white film, creating chemigrams, and learning about anthotypes.

Testing different plant-based solutions has been a fascinating journey, revealing the unique tonal qualities and unpredictability of natural development methods. Working with chemigrams has also allowed me to embrace a more experimental and hands-on approach, playing with resist techniques and chemical reactions to create striking abstract images. Learning about anthotypes—an entirely plant-based and light-sensitive process—has deepened my appreciation for slow, organic image-making and the relationship between nature and photography.

Developing Accessible and Engaging Workshops

As I’ve explored these processes the key was to develop creative ways to embed them into workshops that are accessible and engaging for different groups. Considering how to make these techniques intuitive and hands-on, ensuring that participants of all abilities can fully take part.

Keep It Simple

Using simple, low-tech methods and natural materials. While a fascinating process in and of itself, ultimately we didn’t continue with Anthotypes because of the very long exposure times required and a lack of spaces to leave the prints undisturbed - definitely want to come back to this process in the future!

Practitioner Workshops

The workshops were designed to encourage curiosity, play, and experimentation. Processes that are as much about a shared experience and togetherness as they are about the final images. We worked with our host partners and with Community Practitioners to test out the activities.

Community-Based Delivery

Bringing these workshops into different community settings has been a rewarding part of the project. Whether working with young people, adults, or those with additional needs, I’ve seen how these tactile and experimental approaches to photography spark curiosity and creativity. Each setting brings new opportunities to adapt and respond to participants' interests, making the workshops flexible and participatory. By creating spaces where people can explore creativity in an intuitive and sensory way, the project helps to break down barriers to creative participation.
