Creative Connections - Photovoice project with Leeds University

A recent Photovoice project in partnership with Leeds University Student Union - I was delighted to support their wellbeing project, when I learned that their project was called ‘Creative Connections’ I just knew that I had to be involved!!!

The focus for the project was “…to connect students with each other, coming together around creative activities in order to tackle loneliness and build a sense of belonging with others”.

The context for this project for the University was “…more than 1,000 students highlighted that concerns about loneliness (52%) came ahead of other major concerns including managing money (49%), course difficulty (49%), finding suitable housing (26%) or even ‘fitting in’ (48%). We know that loneliness and lack of a sense of belonging are strong predictors of young people’s mental ill-health.

A participatory photography project to bring people together, share experiences and stories? Right up my street! Two sessions were held exploring the role that images can play in bringing us together, looking at different perspectives on Campus life.

In two 90 min sessions I was really struck by the breadth and depth of conversations - it was wonderful to work alongside Leeds University Union on this - we are currently exploring ways to share this work with the University community. Huge thanks to everyone who took part, share their thoughts and got involved, without them none of this would be possible!

Working with Chris on this program was a wonderful experience. Chris’ enthusiasm for his creative practice was evident in his passion and his willingness to share that with others. He understood the connection between the self, the community and how the image could tie us all together. He was able to translate that for our students. His sessions were some of our most popular, and LUU looks forward to working with him and Our Creative Connection for future events.
